What is Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) Certification?

CIW or Certified Internet Webmaster certification programs equip you with a broad range of Internet skills and provide a standard measure of technical competency in the field of Internet technologies. CIW Certification is vendor-neutral and is suitable for all IT professionals, from those entering the IT industry for the first time to those who already have experience and/or who have achieved vendor certification. As the use of Internet technologies proliferates with ever increasing speed, so the demand has increased for professionals who are equipped to design, develop, administer, secure and support Internet/Intranet services.

The fact that CIW certification is vendor-neutral is a distinct advantage, and one that is increasingly recognized by IT professionals and employers. Vendor neutral certification programs offer you a more-rounded insight into the technology. Whilst vendor-certification programs tend to offer a rosy picture of the technology, vendor-neutral programs provide an unbiased and realistic perspective without the ‘benefit’ of a vendor’s rose tinted spectacles. What CIW lacks in vendor certification is more than made up for by the recognition and endorsement CIW certification receives from the three leading Internet professional associations: International Webmasters Association (IWA), the Internet Certification Institute International (ICII) and the Association of Internet Professionals (AIP).

CIW certification programs offer you six levels of certification: Associate, and Professional levels, plus four tracks at the level of Master Certification: Master Designer, Master Developer, Master Administrator and Master Web Site Manager.

CIW Associate: This is the basic CIW certification level and is required before moving on to the higher level certification levels. A single foundation exam tests proficiency in fundamental concepts of Internet technologies including web authoring using HTML and network infrastructure.
CIW Professional: The next level up is the CIW Professional level. This level is reached following the successful completion of a single job role exam as well as the Associate level foundations exam.
Master CIW Designer: This level is reached following the successful completion of the foundations exam and two exams based on the Internet job roles of Site Designer and E-Commerce Designer.
Master CIW Administrator: The CIW Administrator level can be reached after successful completion of the foundations exam and three administrator exams based on the Internet job roles of: Server Administrator, Internetworking Professional and Security Professional.
Master CIW Web Site Manager: Certification at this level requires successful completion of the foundations exam and two exams based on the Internet job roles of Site Designer and Server Administrator. In addition, two language exams must be completed which cover the fundamentals of PERL and JavaScript.
Master CIW Developer: This level is the most comprehensive and, in addition to completion of the foundations exam requires successful completion of three exams based on Internet job roles and three four language exams. The Internet job roles include Application Developer, Database Specialist, and Enterprise Specialist, whilst the four language exams include JavaScript, Perl, Java Programming and Object-Oriented Design and Analysis.
