What is Server+ Certification?
Becoming Server+ certified has offered a means to ensure a standard of technical competency among tech professionals working with multiple vendor environments. Server+ plus also adds an added advantage in the service departments because more technicians are certified to do more things on a versatile level. They have the know-how and skills to diagnose and troubleshoot tech problems on multiple makes and models. This common language adds to the productivity and efficiency of whole departments.
As a Server+ certified professional, you will have demonstrated that you have attained the work experience of a tech professional who has spent 18 to 24 months in the server field. You will be able to prove that you have in-depth knowledge of servers, including hands-on knowledge of troubleshooting, physical security, and disaster recovery from a server failure with the acquisition of your Server+ certification. Entry-level and Intermediate-level positions as Field Support Technician, Hardware Installation Coordinator, Computer Operator and Internet Systems Administrator are ideal positions for those with Server+ certification.
You will need to have a thorough grasp of key concepts in order to pass the exams. These concepts include knowledge of:
- Installation (17%)
- Configuring (18%)
- Upgrading (12%)
- Proactive Maintenance (9%)
- Environment (5%)
- Troubleshooting and Problem Determination (27%)
- Disaster Recover (12%)
There are four main components of the tests; a Response Limit section where the test-taker selects the most appropriate statement from four other options; a Multiple-Choice section; a Multiple-Response section where the examinee chooses the question or correctly completes the statement; and a Sample Directions section where the individual taking the exam reads a statement or a question and chooses the most fitting response(s) to the options listed.
If you are looking to advance your career as a tech professional in a service department, having a Server+ certification gives you the versatility to work effectively in multiple environments. You will have the hands-on training needed to show employers that not only do you understand the problems, but you will also know how to troubleshoot and resolve the issues competently. Having Server+ certification gives you, as well as your future employer, the confidence that you thoroughly understand hardware configuration and network connectivity, have the ability to install and configure server hardware to meet application requirements, have good planning and integration skills necessary to upgrade a server, know how to increase storage capacity, and can determine the problem for all aspects of the server.
Many employers recommend and even require that their IT employees get Server+ certification as a standard measure of productivity and competency. In a recent study conducted by CompTIA, findings show that IT professionals highly prefer employees or candidates with certification. 84.1% of certified professionals surveyed were found to feel that they had the skills employers were seeking. 76.4% of IT managers indicated that certification was a major factor in deciding whether a candidate would be up for a promotion. A majority of managers also noted that having certification also gave them higher incentive to hire a new employee. As Server+ Certified, you will have the common language and knowledge of technology to keep you versatile and competitive in the tech industry.
